Enneagrammet - derfor bruger jeg det / The Enneagram - that's why I use it

ENGLISH: The Enneagram - that's why I use it

The most striking feature about the Enneagram is very much the somewhat strange appearance of it. It looks like something a very attention seeking devil worshipper would have invented. To me its appearance goes against it. However, there is still something very beautiful about it. It may be an odd-looking symbol whose provenance is relatively unknown, but it is also a very modern tool. To me it is a map of known and recognised behavioural patterns and motivations belonging to the human psyche and manifested in 9 different groups. And then the whole thing becomes somewhat more appealing to me.

I use the Enneagram in a cooperation with my clients and I use it as a tool. It easily becomes a map that shows the road from one place to another – a guide for development. At the same time, it is also a language to me. The various cross-roads in the Enneagram have their particular expressions and meanings and that means that I as a coach can be more precise and subsequently help my clients achieve the change they desire.

Working with the Enneagram as a guide gives the client an insight into his or her own patterns which in turn increases their awareness of when they fall into their own patterns and when to act consciously and adapted to a given situation.

One of the advantages of the Enneagram is that because there are those well-known patterns of behaviour with the various types as a coach you’re quickly able to identify them and deal with them. And the clients experience that they are being seen, heard and not least: Understood.

The various types each have their characteristic patterns of behaviour that typically cause problems when they’re being over-used. Here it is a big help to be able to decode these patterns and replace a less appropriate behaviour with a more appropriate – and all within the client’s “natural” behaviour. Some will have to learn to turn their external energy down a notch because they can seem aggressive when their just being enthusiastic – others have to learn that being worried can be a very useful characteristic if you have to ensure the quality of something. Or that other people may like to have the opportunity to ask for help instead of having it pushed onto them – perhaps even before they’re ready to receive it.

There are probably other ways to discover these things. I just haven’t seen them. I’ve worked with the Enneagram for 10 years by now and it keeps surprising me with its precision.
