Når “pyt” redder liv / When “never mind” saves lives

Opdateret: 16. dec. 2018

When “never mind” saves lives

He is a nice elderly gentleman - a still proud and active craftsman of the old school with professional pride. A man who tidies up when he’s finished. A man who comes up with helpful suggestions and a man who believes that it's the good work that creates the next customer. A man who employs the best possible book-keeper, who NEVER looks at the time because you have to finish the job: His lovely wife.

We sat there at the dinner party in our nice clothes and quite quickly, the conversation became about what is now really taking up most of his waking hours. The fact that the IRS has chosen – as a random check – to go through their entire accounts for 2014. And have concluded that they have two items where they can’t deduct VAT from that year - a total of 1100 kroner.

And the nice, solid man just can’t make peace with it. These are two bills where they do not have the required invoice because it is handled automatically through the bank and thus only shown on a printout. I would think that they have an annual turn-over of 800.000 + a year. But that 1100 kroner from three years ago – they hurt. They really do. He is now intending to sue the IRS because he thinks they are suggesting that he is cheating.

And I sat there with my mouth open and thought that those two bills and the IRS do not deserve to take up that much space and attention in his life and in his relationship. That he and his wife have everything so beautifully under control that the IRS can only find to minor items after a thorough examination of their entire year’s work – that is totally lost on him. That I wish he could say “never mind” and move on in life with his lovely wife and with his happy customers. That the little stone in the shoe should be gotten rid of. That the price of the fight is literally far too big.

What fights do you pick that are not worth it at all? That only wear you out without any rewards?

When do you say “never mind”?
